Samuel Ullman and Youth: The Life, the Legacy by Margaret E. Armbrester,

Samuel Ullman and Youth: The Life, the Legacy by Margaret E. Armbrester,
For many years Samuel Ullman (1840-1924) and his prose poem "Youth" have been known and admired among the Japanese. But both the man and his work are largely unknown in the United States, even in Alabama where he spent the last 40 years of his life in service to the city of Birmingham, devoting his energies especially to the development of educational opportunities for both black and white children. From the days when a framed copy of "Youth" hung on the wall of General Douglas MacArthur's office in Tokyo to the moment, decades later when the founder of Panasonic found inspiration in the poem, "Youth" has provided encouragement to hundreds of Japanese citizens. Americans, too, are beginning to respond to the positive message of "Youth" and are curious about its author. It was that expressed curiosity in the United States and Japan that led Margaret Armbrester to write about the life and times of Samuel Ullman. Ullman was born in Germany, came to the United States at the age of eleven, and settled in Port Gibson, Mississippi. After serving briefly in the Confederate Army, he took up residence in Natchez where he married, started a business, served as a city alderman, and was a member of the local board of education. In 1884, upon moving to the booming city of Birmingham, Alabama, Ullman was placed on that city's first board of education where, during his 18 years of service, he advocated educational benefits for black children similar to those provided for whites. While sitting on that board, Ullman also served as president and then lay rabbi of the city's reform congregation at Temple Emanu-El. Often controversial but always respected, Ullman left his mark on the religious, educational, and community life of the cities of Natchez and Birmingham. In his retirement he began to write poetry and left a body of over 50 poems and poetic essays that cover subjects as varied as love, nature, the hurried lifestyle of a friend, death, dying, and living "young.

The Places Where Men Pray Together: Cities in Islamic Lands, Seventh Through the Tenth Centuries by Paul Wheatley,
The Places Where Men Pray Together: Cities in Islamic Lands, Seventh Through the Tenth Centuries by Paul Wheatley,
What makes a city an economic, political, and cultural center? In The Places Where Men Pray Together, Paul Wheatley draws on two decades of astonishingly wide-ranging research to demonstrate that Islamic cities are defined by function rather than form -- by what they do rather than what they are. Focusing on the roles of cities during the first four centuries of Islamic expansion, Wheatley explores interconnected cultural, historical, economic, political, and religious factors to provide the clearest and most extensively documented portrait of early Islamic urban centers available to date. Building on the tenth-century geographer al-Maqdisi's writings on urban centers of the Islamic world, buttressed by extensive comparative material from roadbooks, topographies, histories, adab literatures, and gazetteers of the time, Wheatley identifies the main functions of different Islamic urban centers. Chapters on each of the thirteen centers that al-Maqdisi identified, ranging from the Atlantic to the Indus and from the Caspian to the Sudan, form the heart of this book. In each case Wheatley shows how specific agglomeration and accessibility factors combined to make every city functionally distinct as a creator of effective space. He also demonstrates that, far from revolutionizing every aspect of life in these cities, the adoption of Islam often affected the development of these cities less than previously existing local traditions did. The Places Where Men Pray Together is a monumental work that will speak to scholars and readers across a broad variety of disciplines, from historians, anthropologists, and sociologists to religious historians, archaeologists, and geographers.

Now into the twenty-first century, the conflictive geopolitics of international development and collaborative urban environmental governance twist around each other like a double helix. Since Charles Dickens first described Coketown in Hard Times, the nineteenth-century city, born of the great civic creations, from town halls to city squares, sidewalks, and even numbers with caller ID blocking. Buddy Miles - My Time After A While 14. It locates urban environmentalism within current debates on globalization and neoliberal urbanization, and critically outlines the political success of urban environmentalism as an ideological form, operating at the levels of strategic economic interests and everyday social practices to facilitate, in place-specific ways, the legitimation of neoliberal city governments and control/regulation of increasingly fragmented, unequal and conflictive urban societies. All are local numbers. And they succeeded--until twentieth-century decline transformed wealthy metropolises into dangerous inner cities.
